personality
Petra is a friendly girl with pretty great social skills, she's like the social butterfly of Levi's Special Squad and doesn't appear to be shy at all. She's just about as cheerful as one in an elite team for killing titans can be, often seen with a happy face in the group whenever they can relax even for a bit. She is outgoing, easily talking to strangers even when she meets them for the first time like when she first speaks with Eren., She’s curious about things and people around her, sneaking into places to have a quick chat with people even while they're busy with other things and sneaking out from places to have a look at what's going on outside if something is going on. She’s kind and caring, her kindness rating is officially said to be ten out of then and she shows it so much that the older boys of the squad say she’s spoiling the newcomer. If you ask Petra, she’s just praising Eren for making the right choice(s) because making them is never easy. Petra speaks about other people with so much gentleness in her voice and eyes, that it’s easy to hear just how much she cares about them. Her tone is the same to new people too which makes her a very easily approachable sweetheart, who easily becomes like an attachment / sister / mother figure of the group. She worries about people around her, often showing a worried face whenever something bad happens even if she doesn't go between fights - at least not when they're not bad enough and problems get solved before anyone needs to stop them.
Loyalty and trust are extremely important values to her. She’s at her best in a tiny group of four (herself included) close friends, where everyone knows each other extremely well. They don’t even always need words to know what each other is thinking, or what they’re going to do next in a fight against a titan. They can argue, they can yell at each other and they’re still strong as ever even after whatever has just been said or done - and even after losing one member, they still go on. Having killed 10 titans by herself and 48 as teamwork with someone else, it’s clear how much Petra relies on teamwork in general. She and Levi are the two, whose words help Eren to trust and believe in them. She wants Eren to trust them and to believe in their teamwork instead of trying something possibly stupid on his own. Sure, he is new and he hasn't seen what they're capable of, but they show it to him. When you’re part of the group, act like everyone else in the group does when facing danger and she’ll be happy. She’s also keen on keeping promises, reminding Eren that he promised the squad to rely on them when Eren’s about to act alone.
Petra herself trusts the tiny squad and its captain. Levi’s orders are absolute, she won’t question them even if it is to protect Eren with a huge risk of dying in the process. She’ll be the first one to yell ‘Roger’ or ‘Yes, sir!’ or anything along those lines after Levi tells them to do something, or just willingly takes any job from him; helping the wounded, bringing reinforcements to the battlefield, taking a message to the other groups with her horse, carrying whatever Levi buys from the marker back to their headquarters, cleaning the headquarters… She’ll do literally anything her captain tells her to do, making it clear just how much wants to do as much as possible for him. The girl has devoted her whole life for Levi in humanity’s war against the titans and she shows her loyalty often. When Eren accidentally transforms in front of them -- and even though it’s not a complete transformation -- Petra (along with the rest of the squad) points her blades at the newcomer in matter of seconds. They are all completely ready to kill the boy if he makes even one wrong move against Levi or any of them. It’s not like she doesn’t feel bad for Eren for doing so -- it’s clear from Levi’s words later that they all do -- but she does have her priorities. No one should expect her, or any of them, to regret situations where they point their blades at potential threats. She must be ready for anything to protect him, and later Eren, and she must do it all without regrets.
She respects Levi a lot. Even if it’s not always so obvious, when people hear her describing Levi as “He’s not what people expect to see., you know. He doesn’t look like the flawless hero they imagine, starting with his short stature. He’s also unexpectedly tense, rude and unapproachable.”... But it is obvious that she clearly doesn't mind his so called flaws at all. Whenever she’s panicking, it’s Levi, who can calm her down. Petra trusts him and her closest friends with her life. She respects his judgement on any situation and his experience and that trust also comes from following him around for how long ever since she’s been in the Survey Corps. Whatever Levi tells them to do, Petra is always shown to listen to his orders. A few words from Levi, while she’s panicking and she is as calm as she can be after it. From the way how she speaks of Levi with so much respect and affection in her voice, it's just clear how much she admires / adores the man. This is a girl, who has written to her father so much about Levi, that her father would actually let her marry him after a few years -- it's not like Petra knows that though, he talks about that to Levi after her death. She’s really proud of being hand-picked by Levi for his squad, having really really boasted about it to her father and she was going to give her all to be of some use to Levi. It’s a really high honor for her, that she obviously worked very hard to achieve. She calls people the same way Levi does, because Levi sets the rules to that for them.
The girl is a fighter, who shows fierce temper on her face and behavior in fights against titans. She's also a survivor, having returned from outside the walls countless times. It’s rare, because many people die there and she’s still young ( I say she’s 20, definitely on her early 20’s anyway! ). Her father obviously tried to keep her home and away from the danger, but she had made up her mind to join the Survey Corps and nothing could stop her. Her kill score is one of highest in the series, so she’s obviously doing whatever she can to help the humanity against giant, human eating monsters. They’re scary, sure, she even worries about Levi whenever he goes to fight them alone despite knowing his fighting style and that Levi is Humanity’s Strongest Soldier. She’s also a soldier, who has learned how to survive outside the walls, where titans can attack anywhere. She’s learned to use her speed and take fast action, based on her or a team member’s prediction of the worst case scenario for the situation. Because you never know what the titans are going to do. you just need to be fearless when facing them. She’s part of an elite group, one of the best around for a dangerous mission, that’s something not to be taken lightly ...They just had really horrible luck against something no one had seen before, so all four ended up dead.
She’s the most emotional member of Levi’s tiny squad, seen as she openly cries even in front of her captain after a comrade dies. She is not a huge crybaby, but she’s clearly not the best at withholding her tears either - and it’s not like she’s ashamed of it. She gets it out and moves on, that’s what you kind of have to do in a world, where you see people die often. She is very sympathetic and empathetic, even on her first meeting with Eren. when she explains how Levi is not how people usually see him and later being the first one to bite her hand (like Eren does to shift into his titan form), and being the one who first apologizes for their misunderstanding of Eren’s reasons for his accidental transformation. Petra is pretty good at reading people’s faces; she sees that Eren is disappointed about something at the same moment of entering the same room, and confirming that a dead comrade heard Levi’s last words to him to the end just by looking at his face. If there’s something more or less visible in someone’s expression, she’ll most likely notice it very soon!
As an elite soldier, Petra is not supposed to lose to herself to her raging emotions. She should keep a cool head at all times, but she does have a very temperamental side along with that emotional side. She gets annoyed easily, resulting in yelling at people and sometimes pointing her blades at them or at least taking the blades out. Saying that the corporal and commander don’t trust their squad, whatever the situation at the moment is, will get her to do that. Or reminding her about how she soaked herself and cried in her first fight against a titan will get her to yell at people, who remind her about it. Because what if Eren or someone else loses their respect for her?! ...And because it’s something she’s unsurprisingly ashamed of. While she gets angry at Eren, there’s even a moment where Oluo tells Petra to knock a tooth or two from Eren and replace Eren’s front teeth with his back ones -- while she’s never shown to be quite that violent, apparently it is possible considering those words. The other members of their squad calm her down (by telling her that Eren is actually right about it, but they explain it to her better than Eren does! though it's not like she actually gives Eren a chance to explain before she starts yelling at him about it...) This happens before she’d actually show whether or not she’d get as mad as to actually hit Eren that hard! But she does elbow Oluo earlier for being an idiot, so she certainly is capable of some hits and not afraid to use some violence even against friends. When the person, who can shift into female titan, is playing hide and seek with them, she gets really enraged and tells the fucker to come out and face her. She gives a fair chance to her opponents even when they don’t give the same to her, she has at least that much respect for battles -- well, until to the point, where she has no respect to it anymore and they just plan to kill her instead of getting the shifter out of there, not even giving them time for healing their wounds. Too bad they underestimate it, having used Eren as an example for all titan shifters but since Eren is new to it... Well, that's a mistake, that they pay with their lives for.
Petra can be very bossy. She tries to order her team member around whenever he is being an idiot (all the time) by telling him to stop his horrible attempts of acting like their Corporal -- bluntly telling him, that he is nothing like Levi at all, and Levi would never say the things he says. When he just annoys her even more, she goes as far as to tell him that he should have bitten his tongue off and die. It’s not like she means it, and Oluo knows it for sure, but she doesn’t apologize for it at all. When Levi is too near of Eren’s titan body, she tells him to get away from Eren (with an added ‘please’ there but…) and while they’re running away from the female titan, she literally screams at Levi to give them orders. And after he does give them orders in that situation, Petra starts telling Eren to do stuff like look the road in front of them and leave their fighting comrades to die. Just because that’s what Levi told them to do. Oluo gets no mercy from her, poor guy gets almost strangled by Hanji and still this girl just tells him that maybe he should watch what he says.
When the situation gets really bad -- as in canon example: two of four are dead, the female titan recovering sight to one of her eyes in less than 30 seconds and looking straight at her, Petra knowing she’ll be the next one to die.... She goes into a hysterical panic mode, loses herself to her emotions completely and loses balance with her maneuver gear, making it impossible for her to get away from the situation with it. It doesn’t help that Oluo tries to tell her to get the balance back, she can’t even listen to him in a situation, which eventually leads to her death. But it really has to be a situation with no way out, and with people important to her dying around her to make her lose herself to her emotions that badly.
